Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is used for treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as other clinical complaints caused or exacerbated by prior negative experiences, or “small t” traumas. EMDR is grounded in the adaptive information processing (AIP) model that posits that pathology results when unprocessed traumatic experiences are stored in their own neural network and are unable to be linked to adaptive neural networks. The 8-Step EMDR protocol facilitates dynamic linkages to adaptive memory networks.
